Which Hair Extensions Are Right for You? A Complete Guide from London's Extension Specialists

If you've started researching hair extensions, you've probably noticed one thing very quickly...

There are a lot of options.

Wefts.

Keratin bonds.

Nano beads.

Tape-ins.

Clip-ins.

So how do you know which one is right for you?

At Cove Hair Co., this is one of the most common questions we're asked, and the answer is actually quite simple:

The best extension method is the one that's right for your hair.

As London's three-time voted Best Extension Salon, we believe every client deserves a customized recommendation based on their hair density, lifestyle, styling habits, and long-term goals—not simply the method that's currently trending.

Let's walk through the options.

Sewn-In Weft Extensions

For most clients, sewn-in wefts are our first recommendation.

They're incredibly versatile, comfortable, discreet, and reusable, making them one of the most cost-effective extension methods available.

Wefts are an excellent choice if you're looking to:

  1. Add length
  2. Increase fullness
  3. Create more volume through the ends
  4. Blend shorter layers
  5. Wear your extensions for the long term

Because the weight is distributed evenly across a bead foundation, they're comfortable to wear and allow for excellent flexibility when installed correctly.

Maintenance

Wefts require maintenance approximately every 6–8 weeks, depending on how quickly your hair grows.

At each maintenance appointment, the extensions are removed, the bead foundation is adjusted, and your wefts are reinstalled.

With proper home care and professional maintenance, high-quality wefts can last many months before needing replacement.

Are Wefts Right for Everyone?

Almost.

While wefts work beautifully for the vast majority of clients, they aren't always the best option.

If someone has extremely fine, fragile, or very low-density hair, a traditional weft may place too much weight on the available natural hair.

In those situations, we often recommend a different approach.

Our goal is never to fit every client into one extension method.

Our goal is to choose the healthiest option for your hair.

Keratin Bond (K-Tip) Extensions

Keratin bond extensions are applied strand by strand using a keratin bond that's gently fused to small sections of your natural hair.

Because each extension moves independently, K-tips offer incredible versatility and are especially useful for clients who want very natural movement.

They're an excellent option for:

  1. Extremely fine or low-density hair
  2. Clients wanting maximum versatility
  3. Adding fullness around the hairline
  4. Shorter hair transformations
  5. Clients who wear their hair up frequently

Because the extensions are distributed throughout the head rather than concentrated into rows, they can create an exceptionally seamless finish.

Maintenance

Unlike wefts, K-tip extensions are not moved up every 6–8 weeks.

Instead, they're worn continuously and professionally removed and replaced approximately every 3–5 months, depending on natural hair growth and how well they're maintained at home.

Nano Bead Extensions

Nano extensions use tiny beads to attach individual extension strands without heat or adhesive.

They're lightweight, discreet, and offer a great balance between flexibility and customization.

Nano extensions can work well for clients who:

  1. Have fine to medium-density hair
  2. Want individual strand movement
  3. Prefer not to use heat or adhesives
  4. Need additional customization around the face

Maintenance is generally recommended every 6–8 weeks to keep the extensions positioned safely and comfortably.

What About Tape-In Extensions?

While tape-in extensions are popular, they're not a method we currently offer.

That's because we choose to focus on the extension methods we believe provide the healthiest, longest-lasting, and most customizable results for our clients.

By specializing in fewer methods, we're able to continually refine our techniques and provide a consistently high standard of work.

Your Lifestyle Matters Just as Much as Your Hair

Choosing the right extension method isn't only about hair density.

We also consider:

  1. How often you wear your hair up
  2. Your daily styling routine
  3. Your workout schedule
  4. How frequently you wash your hair
  5. Your maintenance budget
  6. Whether you want length, volume, or both
  7. Your long-term hair goals

Every recommendation we make is based on what will work best for you.

Healthy Hair Always Comes First

One of the biggest misconceptions about extensions is that they damage your hair.

When they're installed correctly, maintained on schedule, and cared for properly at home, professional extensions should not damage healthy natural hair.

In fact, many of our clients are able to grow their natural hair longer because extensions reduce the need for daily heat styling while protecting their ends from constant wear.

The key isn't simply having extensions.

It's having the right extensions installed correctly.

Why Experience Matters

Hair extensions are one of the most technical services offered in our industry.

At Cove Hair Co., extensions aren't just another service on our menu.

They're our specialty.

Our founder has over 15 years of experience working exclusively with professional hair extensions and has spent the past five years educating hairstylists in advanced extension techniques.

Education doesn't stop there.

Our team trains together regularly, continually refines installation methods, and stays current with the latest techniques, products, and industry advancements so every client receives the highest level of care.

Still Not Sure Which Extensions Are Right for You?

That's exactly what consultations are for.

During your consultation, we'll assess your hair, discuss your goals, answer all of your questions, and recommend the extension method that's healthiest, most comfortable, and best suited to your lifestyle.

Because the best extensions aren't the most expensive.

They're the ones designed specifically for you.
